How to Read Your InBody or DEXA Scan – And What Actually Matters

If you’ve ever stepped off an InBody machine or climbed down from a DEXA scan table, there’s a good chance your eyes immediately searched for one number: body fat percentage. That’s understandable. After all, body fat percentage is often treated as the ultimate scorecard in the fitness industry. People compare it on social media, celebrate when it drops, and sometimes panic when it doesn’t move in the direction they expected. The problem is that focusing on body fat percentage alone is a little like evaluating a business based solely on revenue without looking at expenses, profit, or growth. You’re seeing part of the picture, but certainly not the whole thing.

As a fitness coach, I’ve reviewed hundreds of body composition reports over the years. One of the most common mistakes I see is people drawing conclusions from a single number while ignoring the data that actually tells the story of their health, performance, and long-term progress. In many cases, the most important information on the report isn’t even the number they looked at first. Whether you’ve completed an InBody scan at a gym, undergone a DEXA scan at a medical facility, or are considering one in the future, understanding how to interpret the results can help you make far more informed decisions about your fitness, nutrition, and overall health.

Understanding the Difference Between InBody and DEXA Scans

Before we discuss the individual metrics, it’s important to understand that an InBody scan and a DEXA scan are not measuring your body in exactly the same way. An InBody scan uses a technology called bioelectrical impedance analysis. A very small electrical current passes through your body, and the device estimates the amount of muscle, fat, and water you carry based on how that current travels through different tissues. Because water conducts electricity efficiently, hydration status can significantly influence the results. This doesn’t make the test useless, but it does mean that consistency matters. An InBody scan performed after a hard workout, a large meal, or a period of dehydration may produce different results than one performed under more controlled conditions.

A DEXA scan, on the other hand, uses low-dose X-ray technology to directly measure body composition. Originally developed to assess bone mineral density, DEXA scans have become one of the most respected methods for evaluating body fat, lean tissue, and regional body composition. While no measurement tool is perfect, DEXA is generally considered more accurate than bioelectrical impedance and is often viewed as one of the gold standards available to the general public. The good news is that regardless of which assessment you use, the principles for interpreting the results remain largely the same.

What Body Fat Percentage Actually Means

Let’s start with the number that gets the most attention: body fat percentage. Body fat percentage simply represents the proportion of your total body weight that comes from fat tissue. If a 200-pound individual has a body fat percentage of 20 percent,  approximately 40 pounds of their body weight consists of fat tissue while the remaining 160 pounds come from everything else, including muscle, bone, organs, and water.

This measurement can certainly provide useful information, but context matters. Two individuals with identical body fat percentages can look dramatically different depending on how much muscle mass they carry. One person may appear athletic, lean, and powerful, while another may look considerably softer despite sharing the exact same percentage. This is why experienced coaches rarely evaluate body fat percentage in isolation. What often matters far more is what makes up the remainder of your body weight.

Why Lean Body Mass Matters More Than Most People Realize

When I review a body composition report, one of the first things I examine is lean body mass. Lean body mass includes everything in your body that is not fat tissue. While this category includes bones, organs, and water, a substantial portion comes from skeletal muscle. Why is that important?

Because muscle is not merely cosmetic tissue. Muscle plays a significant role in movement, strength, metabolic health, insulin sensitivity, physical function, and healthy aging. Individuals who maintain higher levels of muscle mass throughout life tend to remain more active, independent, and resilient as they get older. In many cases, the primary goal of a successful fitness program is not simply to lose weight. It is to reduce excess body fat while preserving or increasing lean tissue.

This distinction becomes especially important when someone is dieting. It is entirely possible to lose twenty pounds and look, feel, and perform worse than before if a substantial portion of that weight loss came from muscle tissue. Unfortunately, many people celebrate weight loss without asking what was actually lost. The scale tells you how much weight has disappeared. Body composition testing tells you what disappeared.

Skeletal Muscle Mass: One of the Most Valuable Numbers on Your Report

This brings us to one of the most valuable metrics on many InBody reports: skeletal muscle mass. Unlike total lean mass, skeletal muscle mass focuses specifically on the muscle tissue that can be developed through resistance training. This number often provides a much clearer picture of whether a fitness program is moving someone in the right direction. For example, if a client loses ten pounds but maintains all of their skeletal muscle mass, that’s generally a positive outcome. If they lose ten pounds while gaining muscle and reducing body fat, that’s an even better outcome. However, if they lose ten pounds and several pounds of muscle along with it, we may need to reevaluate their nutrition, training program, recovery practices, or rate of weight loss.

Using Segmental Analysis to Identify Muscle Imbalances

Another section that often deserves more attention than it receives is segmental analysis. One of the advantages of InBody testing is that it breaks the body into separate regions, allowing you to evaluate muscle distribution in each arm, each leg, and the trunk. This information can reveal muscular imbalances, identify potential weaknesses, and even highlight the lingering effects of previous injuries. For athletes, active adults, and individuals over forty, this information can be particularly valuable. Building muscle is important but building it proportionally is equally important.

Why Visceral Fat Is a Critical Health Marker

One measurement that many people overlook entirely is visceral fat. Unlike the fat that sits beneath the skin and influences appearance, visceral fat accumulates around the internal organs. Excessive visceral fat is associated with elevated risks for cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and numerous other health concerns.

What’s interesting is that someone can appear relatively lean while still carrying unhealthy levels of visceral fat. This is one reason why body composition testing can provide information that a mirror alone cannot. If your report includes visceral fat measurements, pay close attention to them. In many cases, improvements in visceral fat represent some of the most meaningful health changes occurring beneath the surface.

Focus on Trends, Not a Single Scan Finally, let’s discuss what may be the most important concept in this entire article. Do not become obsessed with a single scan. An InBody scan or DEXA scan is a snapshot in time. It is one data point. The true value comes from observing trends over weeks, months, and years. Your body composition will fluctuate. Hydration changes. Glycogen levels change. Daily body weight changes. Even highly accurate assessments contain small margins of error. What matters is the direction of the trend. Are you preserving muscle while reducing excess body fat? Are you becoming stronger? Is your waist circumference improving? Is your visceral fat decreasing? Are your health markers moving in the right direction? Those are the questions that deserve your attention.

The Real Purpose of Body Composition Testing

Body composition testing can be an incredibly useful tool when interpreted correctly. It can help remove some of the emotion from the process and provide objective feedback about what is actually happening beneath the surface. But the purpose of the test isn’t to assign your body a grade. The purpose is to provide information that helps guide better decisions. The most successful people I work with aren’t the ones who obsess over every decimal point on a report. They’re the ones who use the information to make smarter choices, stay consistent, and focus on long-term progress rather than short-term perfection. At the end of the day, the goal isn’t simply to weigh less. The goal is to build a stronger, healthier, more capable body that serves you well for years to come.
